At Junction 9, the Mission studio was designed to balance movement, mindfulness, and community. The space feels calm and inclusive, with a welcoming reception that serves as a natural gathering point and sets the tone upon arrival. Soft, natural materials, gentle curves, and abundant daylight create an environment that feels open yet grounded, while the organized Pilates studio supports focus and ease of movement. Together, these elements shape a space that encourages connection, clarity, and a sense of belonging—both during practice and beyond.

Balancing design integrity with budget: When tender pricing exceeded the client’s budget, the challenge was to maintain the original design vision without compromise. This was addressed by the clients taking on the role of General Contractor, allowing cost savings while preserving the intended aesthetic and experience.
Taking a hands-on approach to construction, the client assumed the role of General Contractor-an approach that proved both strategic and successful. This collaborative process allowed the design vision to remain fully intact while ensuring flexibility and efficiency throughout the build, with our team adapting the design process to provide ongoing support.
Cost efficiencies were achieved through thoughtful material selections that preserved the intended aesthetic. Alternative floor and reception desk tile were specified to deliver the same visual impact at a lower cost, while Bodaq wall covering was strategically used in place of wood veneer panels behind millwork, maintaining warmth and texture while optimizing the budget.
Lighting: Lighting selections within the studios were carefully considered with the client experience at the forefront of the design decisions. The studio lighting accommodates movement, ensuring that during reformer and mat work, clients are not looking up at harsh or direct light. Dimmable directional track lighting and diffused pendants create customizable lighting that can be adjusted based on the time of day.
Locker Variety: A thoughtful range of locker sizes were included in the design to accommodate varying client needs. Large lockers can be used by those attending class before or after work with a larger bag and extra set of clothing, while small lockers are ideal for those who come to the studio with only the essentials such as their phone and keys.
Natural Light: Studios were strategically placed along the perimeter of the building to maximize natural light, creating a sense of openness and connection to the Mission community, aligning with the principals of wellness design.
Statement Reception
The reception desk acts as an anchor for the entire studio. Designed as a gathering space, it promotes moments of connection before and after class.
Rammed Earth Feature Wall
The rammed earth feature wall serves as one of the studios defining features. The organic texture of the plaster beautifully contrasts with the clean lines throughout the studio. Beyond its visual impact upon entry, the organic nature of the feature wall sets the tone for a restorative and wellness focused environment.
Pilates Studio
The Pilates studio was designed to feel light, open, and calming, allowing the Junction 9 community to focus on their practice in a supportive environment. Custom millwork keeps the space organized and ensures that each piece of equipment has a designated spot.
